Green energy policies could add 30% to bills
Downing Street advisors have suggested that green energy policies could add up to £300 to annual household energy bills by the end of the decade.
Ben Moxham, David Cameron's senior policy adviser on energy and environment, wrote a note titled ‘Impact of our energy and climate policies on consumer energy bills’, warning of the increase in energy bills as a result of new green energy policies.
The paper, seen by the Daily Telegraph, identifies four policies, including the demand for more renewable energy sources that will increase consumer energy bills, and suggests that increased energy efficiency, such as better home insulation, will not be enough to off-set the rise in energy costs.
Moxham wrote at the end of July: “We find the scale of household energy consumption savings calculated by DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) to be unconvincing.
“Their analysis may be based on the assumption that many energy efficiency measures will be taken up without subsidy, whereas we believe a large number of measures will need to be subsidised, given the hassle factor and other barriers to consumer uptake.
“Over time it is clear that the impact of our policies on consumer bills will become significantly greater.”
