Slide into centralisation?
The influx of new free schools and academies is leaving much of the strategic management of education out of local government hands, with schools only accountable to the secretary of state.
Does this necessarily mean there is a slide into centralisation? And do we need more regulation, monitoring and planning to ensure standards are maintained in these schools?
The changing role of local government in education will have significant consequences, and councils must shift their remit of responsibility accordingly.
