Welsh Council appoints new acting chief exec
Powys County Council has appointed a new acting chief executive to support it with transformation and improvement work.
Dr. Mohammed Mehmet has been awarded the position, having previously been the chief executive of Denbighshire County Council.
Council leader, Cllr Rosemarie Harris, announced the appointment at a full meeting of the council yesterday.
The announcement follows a recommendation to Welsh government and Welsh local government association that a package of support be provided to help the council to implement changes and improvements.
Harris said: “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Mehmet to the role of acting chief executive.
"He has been chief executive of Denbighshire for more than a decade, joining them at a time of challenge for the council with a difficult inspection of their children’s services and their education provision.”
She thanked David Powell, who will work closely with Mehmet in his new role of deputy chief executive, for how he has carried out the role of chief executive since October 2017, when the council’s existing chief executive, Jeremy Patterson, went on sick leave, during what she described as "a very difficult time" following the inspection of children’s services.
Mehmet will join the council later this month for a period of nine months whilst Patterson remains on sick leave.
