UK a ‘worse place’ for families

Only 6% of new mothers surveyed believe that the Coalition Government has made the UK a better place for families. The survey, undertaken for the Family and Parenting Institute by Bounty, interviewed 2,000 women who are either pregnant or have children up to the age of two.

Of those surveyed, 22% believed the Government has made the UK a worse place for families and 47% believed there was no change. While 51% believed the Government was responsible for improving this, 62% suggested businesses were even more responsible.

The Family and Parenting Institute released the survey as part of its national Family Friendly scheme, which aims to make the UK a society truly supportive of family life.

Dr Katherine Rake, chief executive of the Family and Parenting Institute, said: “We know being a new mother bring all sorts of new challenges – but now new mothers are being hit particularly hard by changes to family benefits.

“This poll gives a clear message that they need more support, not just from the government but from all elements of society. In these austere times, we must do more to nurture new families.”
