Tagging overcharges to be repaid

Serco has agreed to repay the Government £68m for overcharging on contracts to tag criminals in the UK. It follows allegations that Serco and G4S had charged for tagging of people who were either dead or in jail.

The case has been referred to the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) by the Ministry of Justice.

Both security firms have withdrawn from the bidding process to win contracts to supervise offenders on their release from prison.

Alastair Lyons, non-executive chairman of Serco, said: “The contract issues that were identified should never have happened and we apologise unreservedly for them. We are doing everything in our power to make sure that such issues cannot reoccur anywhere in our business around the world.

“Our objective is to deliver excellent public services with openness and transparency, and I believe the actions we are taking will support this now more than ever.”
