Multi-million pound projects in Grimsby given green light
North East Lincolnshire Councillors approved plans yesterday (May 28) that will see a total of £4.967m invested into two major highway projects.
Part of the plan will release £2.967m of Department of Transport funding for vital repairs to Grimsby’s historic Grade 2 listed Corporation Road Bridge.
The Council has already earmarked a further £1.83m and £170,000 from the Local Transport Fund to allow the project to get underway.
The refurbishment will enable the historic Bridge, opened in 1928, to be a ‘moveable’ structure with a counterweight that continuously balances a span, or ‘leaf’ throughout its upward swing, giving clearance for boat traffic.
Detailed planning for the Bridge work can now go ahead, with specialists appointed and time scales identified.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Portfolio holder for Environment and Transport said:
“This bridge, along with other key structures across our town, are constant reminders of what made Grimsby ‘great’. They represent our history and our heritage,”
“As an authority, we are determined to do all within our power to ensure such structures are here for the next generation. Grimsby without Corporation Road Bridge is not an option and if we don’t act now, it will be lost forever in its present form.”
In addition, Estate Road 2 will benefit from completely restructured footways and carriageway, at a cost of £2m, with £1.9m agreed in capital funding to be released and £180,000 from the approved Local Transport Plan.
The Council has said if action on these projects were not taken, it would threaten the heritage of the town’s industrial history and would impact significantly on businesses, blocking the future economic growth of the area.
