Flood of concern
Flooding is a major concern for the millions of people whose homes are at risk, whilst the Government seems to be dodging responsibility, cutting funding and potentially allowing its agreement with the insurance industry to run out.
Climate change means that the risk of flooding is growing and the predicted damage it will cause in the future is of epic proportions. Strategies must be reworked to include efficiency savings and better use of resources.
Additionally, Defra cannot rely on stretched councils to provide extra funding, and their local flood management systems must be assessed to ensure their quality.
Responsibility for flood damage cannot be fractured across different authorities. It must be assumed by a central body that provides funding, advice, assessments and insurance cover for those likely to be affected.
