EDF Energy awarded UK’s largest electricity contract
Many of the country’s biggest public sector organisations and Government departments will be supplied with electricity by EDF Energy following an intensive procurement process.
The Government Procurement Service ran the tender process, which has resulted in EDF winning the contract to supply energy and electricity to the Ministry of Defence, the NHS, the Metropolitan Police, London Underground and the Highways Agency amongst others.
The contract will run for four years starting from April 2012, and start with the supply of 30TWh of electricity. This volume could increase significantly as additional public sector bodies join the uptake and is higher than any previous electrical supply contract in the UK.
CEO of EDF Energy, Vincent de Rivaz said: “We are proud the Government has placed its trust in us to supply power and energy efficiency advice to public services that millions of people depend on every day.
“EDF Energy will be powering a vast range of public buildings across England and Wales, from inner city academies to some of the UK’s most treasured museums, from central Government departments to major hospitals.
”As the UK’s largest supplier of electricity to businesses and the leading generator of low carbon electricity, we have the expertise to support the Government in its sustainability agenda, improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.”
EDF will also provide sustainability advice to government departments in an effort to help meet the Government target of a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2013.
