Councils must pass on parish funding
The government has reiterated that principal authorities should pass on all council tax support funding to parish and town councils.
Following a meeting with local government minister Kris Hopkins MP, the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) said it was pleased the government ‘in principle’ believes the funding from county, district, unitary and borough councils ought to be passed on.
The reaffirmation comes after more than 30 principal authorities failed to pass on any funding to parishes in 2014. NALC has fears that more are likely to follow suit in the next year.
Cllr Ken Browse, chair of NALC, said: “This situation is unacceptable and must be addressed, with the minister’s expectation [that] funding should be passed on being conveyed to this growing number of councils.
“I would like to thank the minister for meeting with us and engaging so positively and constructively on the concerns we have on finance issues affecting parishes.”
