Approval given for 172 new homes in Dorset

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s planning committee has given the green light for 172 new homes.

A development of 114 homes on land that is currently used for agricultural purposes was approved by the committee yesterday.

This development will include 35% affordable housing, comprising 28 homes for affordable rent and 12 homes for shared ownership.

A Persimmon Homes South Coast spokesperson said: “We are pleased to be delivering much-needed modern homes for local people at this location, and look forward to playing our part in the generation of new jobs to support the economy in the area.”

An online application from Homes England for the Southwell Primary School site, which could see the construction of up to 58 properties, including affordable housing provision, has also been approved.

The council has said that this will retain an important tree belt and hedgerow and enhance the existing nature area on site.

Next, the application will be submitted to the housing, communities and local government secretary as a matter of principle as the proposal includes the loss of a sports field on the former schools site.

Ian Knight, head of accelerated delivery for Homes England in the south west, said that he was delighted to have had the plans approved in principle.

“Once selected our developer partner for the site will consult local people on the detailed design of the scheme and we will make sure the design requirements set out in the masterplan are adhered to,” he added.
