£1.5bn public works civil engineering contractor appointed
Balfour Beatty has been appointed by Scape Group as the sole provider to a new four-year, £1.5bn national civil engineering and infrastructure framework for public works.
The framework will provide a variety of services ranging from minor road repairs to facilitating new bridges and major road projects.
It is operated by Scape Group, a public sector-owned built environment specialist offering a full suite of national frameworks.
Scape said it conducted a rigorous tender process attracting a number of major contractors, but ultimately selected Balfour Beatty as its preferred supplier because the company was able to offer the most competitive pricing.
The Civil Engineering and Infrastructure framework is OJEU compliant, removing the need for long tender processes that previously applied to such work, enabling any civil engineering project, such as roads, flood defences, regeneration and light rail schemes, to be rapidly activated.
Mark Robinson, CEO at Scape Group, said: “We are excited to be working with a partner of Balfour Beatty’s calibre and are confident that they will provide the very best value for our clients, delivering projects in the most efficient way, and that together we can save the public sector millions of pounds. This is the first framework able to support such a diverse range of projects and is available to all public sector bodies across the UK, be it a local authority or parish council.
“The existing Scape frameworks have already saved the public sector over £200m and 70 years’ worth of procurement time. This latest addition will help us to build on this achievement and comes at a time when the government is pioneering its ‘roads revolution’ – infrastructure is the government’s top priority and it is also ours.”
Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty’s group chief executive said: “Balfour Beatty has significant depth of expertise across the UK in delivering civil engineering projects successfully and through this appointment we will be able to improve delivery for our customers and expand our portfolio of local infrastructure schemes. I am also delighted that we share Scape’s commitment to employ and develop trainees and apprentices in acquiring the skills necessary to build lifelong careers, and to support the local businesses that the infrastructure sector relies on.”
Projects under the framework will be valued between £1m and £40m and it is anticipated they will start to be awarded in the spring. The framework will operate until February 2019.
