South Tees Development Corporation should be established ‘as soon as possible’
A sustainable economy for the Tees Valley following the closure of the SSI Steelworks must be supported by the government, according to an independent report
The report, from Conservative peer Lord Heseltine, says that the South Tees Development Corporation should be established and given control of the former steelworks site “as soon as possible”.
It also says that the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, HM Revenue and Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions should publish a plan for how information about the impact of job losses from the steelworks should be published as soon as possible.
The report says: “It is clear that the economic picture in the Tees Valley is altogether more positive than perceptions drawn from the media.”
Other recommendations include intervening to improve failing schools in the area, identifying sites for building starter homes, and developing a new rationale for carbon dioxide capture and storage.
