700 new council homes under construction in London borough of Brent
London Borough of Brent Council has announced today (Aug 3) that just under 700 new council homes are under construction in the area as part of a £395m investment.
This is the highest number of council homes delivery for any local authority in London, and there are another 913 council homes in the delivery pipeline.
The Council has a target of 5,000 new affordable homes to become available over a five-year period, with 1,000 of those to come direct through its own building programme.
£300m of the funding will come from the Council alongside a £95m grant from the Greater London Authority (GLA).
Councillor Eleanor Southwood, Cabinet Member for Housing and Welfare Reform, said:
“I’m immensely proud to build on our existing record of leading the way in London for the number of new council homes built each year. We won’t allow these early successes to make us complacent - there is obviously much more to do if we are to make housing universally affordable, readily available; and of the highest possible standard – but in the meantime, I look forward to welcoming residents to their new Brent Council homes very soon.”
Brent has also announced today that futuristic technology has helped to fill more than 4,900 potholes in the last three months, in a quicker and cheaper approach to the problem.
Video technology mapped the road surface to identify defects and then artificial intelligence was used to analyse, identify and categorise the potholes.
This method enabled the council to save more than half the amount they would spend fixing this problem using traditional methods.
