Cheshire East Council has announced a record-breaking £53 million investment in its highways and transport network for 2025/26 – the largest in over 10 years.
The ambitious plans aim to improve the condition of the borough’s roads, enhance public transport, and expand infrastructure for walking, wheeling, and cycling.
The investment includes £14.4 million from the council’s own budget, alongside more than £38.6 million in government funding, including:
- £7.75 million Transport Grant for general transport improvements
- £5.4 million Local Bus Grant to enhance bus services
- Up to £5.5 million for highways maintenance
Chair of the council’s highways and transport committee, Cllr Mark Goldsmith, commented:
“This investment will deliver real improvements that people will see and feel in their daily lives – spending money where it will have the greatest impact.
“Whether it’s smoother roads, better bus connections, or safer routes for walking and cycling. We’re committed to making Cheshire East a better place to live, work, and travel through safer, greener, and more accessible transport options.”

The council’s 2025/26 programme will focus on:
- Delivering the largest road improvement programme in a decade, prioritising road safety and high-traffic routes
- Completing key A-road schemes across the borough
- Undertaking complex investigation and repair works to improve long-term road resilience
- Finishing phase one of a 1.5-mile walking and cycling route, with separated lanes and safer junctions for pedestrians and cyclists
- Upgrading bus stops to improve accessibility and the overall passenger experience
This investment reflects Cheshire East’s commitment to sustainable transport, road safety, and community connectivity. By focusing on the roads people use most and improving active travel options, the council aims to reduce congestion, support public health, and make travel more accessible for all.
