The demands of success

Controversy surrounding public sector bonuses continues to grow, with a Coalition ordered review of the payouts, to ensure publicly-owned companies and government departments are paying out rewards based only on success.

Although there have been high-profile cases of executives giving up their bonuses, this only scrapes the surface of the amount of money given away in this manner. If the public is outraged by individual cases such as Stephen Hester, they should likewise be incensed by the whole system.

But eliminating reward regardless of performance will require a significant shift in practice, one which will obviously be opposed by those who would benefit, but equally by those who suggest that expensive remuneration is necessary to attract and secure professionals with the expertise to ensure success.

Do we risk losing these skilled leaders? Or should payments based only on results be standard practice?
