Public sector pensions for outsourced staff

Outsourced Government staff will now keep access to public sector pensions, new guidance states.

The Treasury has updated the Fair Deal guidance, which used to mandate only “broadly comparable” private pension schemes for employees who were compulsorily transferred from the public sector.

Contractors will now need to reach a ‘Participation Agreement’ with a relevant pension scheme during the procurement process.

The update, announced by ministers this summer and published last week, applies to those working in central government departments and agencies. This includes staff working for the NHS and academies, but not local government.
