Oxford City Council plans £200k bike facilities upgrade
Hundreds of new bike spaces could be built in Oxford city centre, as part of Oxford City Council’s £200,000 plan to improve the city’s cycling infrastructure.
Consultants told the city council that 665 new spaces could be built around the city centre, with the authority having already set aside £30,000 for around 100 new spaces.
Now, it has said it wants businesses and other organisations in the city to fund more. Oxford University has offered a further £21,000 and said it will consider options as to whether it could build more spaces on its land.

The new spaces could be created by installing new bike racks, changing the type of existing racks or by repositioning them.
Throughout the city centre, there are nearly 3,906 bike spaces already installed – with around 1,000 of those located at Westgate.
New proposals would see that total increase by 17% to 4,571 spaces.
Louise Upton, Oxford City Council's cabinet member for Healthy City, said: “We now know what is possible. Our £30,000 is a down payment on this project, and we are inviting businesses in Oxford city centre to contribute.”
