London councils collaborate with NHS to drive health improvements through devo deal

The mayor of London and London Councils are working with NHS organisations and regional health and care leaders across the capital to bring about changes in a new devolution deal signed with Jeremy Hunt.

The deal will give devolved powers to the capital’s health system, giving Londoners more control over decisions that affect them in health and social care.

The London Health and Care Strategic Partnership Board will provide strategic and operational oversight for the London health and care programme, and a subcommittee has been established to examine common workforce issues across health and social care.

The subcommittee, the London Workforce Board, is made up of members from local government, social care, trade unions, higher education institutes and Health Education England (HEE), and is chaired by the independent chair of HEE's regional local education and training board, Dame Christine Beasley.

The board will explore specific workforce issues in detail, including maximising the benefit of apprenticeships and establishing a London-wide view of health and social care workforce in the capital.

Last month, London health and care partners attended an event to look at the detail of what health and care devolution means for the city, and how existing initiatives could be complemented.
