Lincolnshire council sets 2050 net-zero carbon target

West Lindsey District Council, in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, has unanimously passed a motion to target becoming a net-zero carbon authority by 2050.

Councillors moved to support the creation of a strategy on sustainability and climate change in order to reach the target. Under the proposals, the local authority will bring itself in line with the government’s net-zero plan.

According to council leader Giles McNeill, the motion was “deliverable” with a proposed strategy being put to them which was “within our grasp to develop”.

The motion tasked the authority’s prosperous communities committee to develop the new strategy on climate change and environment, ahead of its presentation at the next annual council meeting.

The proposals will consider achieving 100% clean energy across all council functions by 2040, as well as ensuring budgets and planning decisions are in line with the transition to the zero-carbon target.

Councillor Lesley Rollings, representative for Scotter and Blyton, said: “I think it is really important that this does not become a strategy that sits on the shelf and has loads of vague things that do not happen.”

Councillor Owen Bierley added: “The sooner that we get started on this piece of work and the faster that we move it on the better. I am really excited that we are starting to develop this strategy.”
