Exeter ‘returns’ to weekly bin collections

Exeter City Council is the latest council to look at returning to weekly bin collections – after concerns were raised that vermin were being attracted to rubbish that was lying around ‘for days’.

Council officials have said the return to weekly collections, scrapped last year, will cost £1.7m, including £700,000 in start-up costs.

Yolanda Henson, leader of the council's opposition Conservative group, said Exeter was a “student area and a transit area” and there were many flats and bed-sits with nowhere to put rubbish outside.

She said: “Weekly bin collections are a must within cities. For health reasons you can't just have rubbish floating around here, there and everywhere.”

Just under half of England’s 386 local authorities conduct fortnightly bin collections, but more and more are looking to return to weekly collections in line with the Coalition Government’s stated aims. Ministers have established a fund to encourage local authorities to bring back weekly collections.
