Council to support 400 university students

Young people living in Tower Hamlets will be offered grants to go to university as the council launches a new scheme targeted at the least well-off.

Grants of £1,500 will be offered to 400 teenagers from the £1.26m local Mayor’s fund. The funding will be paid in two installments over the first two years of the student’s course, and will help pay for living costs including text books and travel.

The scheme is set to run for two years.

Tower Hamlets councillor Oliur Rahman said: “We are the first authority in the country to be backing our teenagers in such an innovative way.

“Achieving a better education is better for the student, better for the student's family and better for the borough.”

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, added: “This is a wonderful opportunity for young people. For local teenagers who thought university was a pipe dream, I hope this scheme will change their minds.”
