Conservative councillor Gary Porter to be next LGA chair

Gary Porter 90x105mmGary Porter is to become the next chair of the Local Government Association.

The leader of South Holland District Council will take up the role on 30 June after nobody else put themselves forward for the role.

Surrey County Council leader David Hodge, and former Cheshire West & Chester Council leader Mike Jones had both been linked with the role but they will both compete to become group leader instead.

Cllr Porter spent the last four years as Conservative group leader at the LGA. The Tories regained control of the organisation after winning more than 500 seats and control of an extra 28 councils in last month’s local elections.

He will take over from Labour former Dudley council leader, David Sparks, who has been in the role since July 2014.
