30,000 lives lost on European roads in 2011

The European Road Safety Charter has launched a campaign called ‘30,000 lives to save’ aimed at cutting the number of people who die on the roads.

That figure is the number of people who died on European roads in 2011.

Across the continent, road-related accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers.

It is estimated that around 102,000 lives may have been saved through the EU road safety programmes from 2001-2010

Individual citizens can now take a pledge to support the campaign.

The key aim of the campaign – ‘no more victims on the roads’ – is a ‘vision zero’ which emerged in Sweden a few years ago and is now influencing a lot of governments around the world in their search for road safety solutions.

Under this approach, the cause of any and every accident has to be addressed.

As part of the campaign, a number of road safety webinars are being held next week:

‘Vulnerable users: motorists’, taking place: November 22, at 11.00 – 12.00 am (CET)

‘Optimising driver training programs for road users’, taking place: November 22, at 14.00 – 15.00 am (CET)

‘Road Safety in the media’, taking place: November 22, at 16.00 – 17.00 am (CET)
