£150m extra support for carers

Carers will be given new rights through legislation set out in the Queen’s Speech tomorrow.

A statutory right will be introduced for carers to access financial support, back-up help from professional carers, or adaptations to their homes.

The number of people caring for elderly relatives with dementia is forecast to grow by more than 150,000 by 2021 and there are currently an estimated seven million carers in Britain, many of whom also work.

If carers’ requests for support are turned down, councils will be required to give detailed explanations for their decision. The Government is allocating £150m to cover the extra support for carers.

The eligibility system will also be simplified, to help carers access support, and councils will be instructed to publicise help available for carers.
