New chief executive set to replace former boss at Liverpool City Council

Liverpool City Council is planning to announce its new chief executive to replace recently-resigned CEO Ged Fitzgerald.

According to reports from the Liverpool Echo, following the conclusion of the interview process the frontrunner for the role appears to be Tony Reeves, who has been working as a consultant to mayor Joe Anderson and with the council to support work left behind by Fitzgerald.

Before joining Liverpool in April this year to advise the authority on strategy and transformation, Reeves was the deputy chief executive at Wakefield City Council from 2003 to 2006, and went on to become the CEO at City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council for over eight years.

Most recently, he worked as a partner and local government advisor at Deloitte for three-and-a-half years until April.

In September 2017 Fitzgerald was suspended from his role due to financial irregularities in a £5m contract for services he was part of whilst working at Lancashire County Council.

In May this year he resigned from Liverpool council ahead of its Annual General Meeting, which could have seen him removed from office.

The authority is expected to formally announce the move when it is agreed by the city’s full council on Wednesday.

Devolution, restructuring and widespread service reform: from a journalist’s perspective, it’s never been a more exciting time to report on the public sector. That’s why I could not be more thrilled to be taking over the reins at PSE at this key juncture. There could not be a feature that more perfectly encapsulates this feeling of imminent change than the article James Palmer, mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, has penned for us on p28. In it, he highlights... read more >
