Blog: Dr Hakim Yadi OBE, CEO of the Northern Health Science Alliance
With EvoNorth just around the corner, we caught up with Dr Hakim Yadi, CEO of the Northern Health Science Alliance, to find out why he is attending EvoNorth 27-28 Feb.
What does your role as CEO of the Northern Health Science Alliance involve?
As CEO of the Northern Health Science Alliance I lead a team which make sure the North’s health innovation system takes part in national and international conversations around such issues as health inequalities, Brexit, Industrial Strategy and inward investment. My role also involves making sure people across the North know about each others works and respective strengths so I am out on the road quite a bit.
What are key issues are you addressing, and how will this drive forward the devolution agenda?
Across the North we have a huge number of strengths in health innovation – particularly in health data, ageing, med tech and precision medicine. Yet the North of England does not have the same access to infrastructure and funding that other parts of the country enjoy. We are working to get industry and government to discover the opportunity in the North of England when it comes to our great universities, NHS hospitals and health partnershipsHealth inequalities between the North and South of England are also high up on our agenda. Our Health for Wealth report published late last year demonstrated £13.2bn a year is lost in productivity because of the poor health of the region. We are working with Government and other stakeholders to see how we can tackle this moving forward to grow the health and wealth of the region.
What does the Northern Powerhouse mean to you?
The North working together to harness its great capabilities to achieve its potential and to rebalance the country.
Why have you got involved with EvoNorth?
We were attracted by the speakers taking part from NHS, local government, national government and key organisations from across the region all talking on key issues in the North and nationally.
Why do you think it’s important for leaders across the region to come together to create a plan for future generations, especially at events like EvoNorth?
Because we can’t sit around waiting for change to happen. We need to work together to find solutions to issues such as health inequalities, poor transport links across the North and the rest of the country, and improving skills and jobs in the region.
Does EvoNorth come at a good time given the devolution and growth momentum across the region?
We need to keep up the momentum when it comes to the North’s agenda. There are towns and cities from Barrow-in-Furness across to Middlesbrough that have been struggling yet which have great potential to drive forward the next industrial revolution in this country. We need to wake up national government to the North of England’s potential by coming up with solutions as to how it can achieve this.
