Council to buy 70 modular homes for homeless families

Milton Keynes Council has unveiled plans (July 15) to purchase 70 modular homes to house homeless families is the area.

The two-bedroom homes will temporarily house families in Fishermead, during an interim period whilst Council staff work to find them a more long-term solution.

Families will be allowed to live in the modular homes for up to two years, alongside getting access to support services and better training and work opportunities.

The original plan was for the Council to lease the properties from a private company; however, the decision is now to buy the homes outright. The Council has said that this decision will deliver better value for money and enable local families to stay together and part of the community.

Work on the Fishermead housing site is expected to be completed by September, at which point people will be given two-year fixed tenancies while they get on their feet.

Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Housing, Councillor Emily Darlington said:

“Buying these modular homes will ensure that we’re able to provide the best support possible to families who have been left with very few options. Council colleagues will support the families to get back on their feet before helping them find a more permanent solution.”
