WMCA deal to deliver 10,000 high quality homes
The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday (Mar 12) that will lead to 10,000 high quality homes in the region.
The partnership between the developers and the combined authority support the WMCA’s commitment to investing in suitable homes for its residents following their recent design charter and Single Commissioning Funding Framework launched September 2019.
This framework sets out the necessary criteria for all new housing projects in the West Midlands including design, modular construction and affordable housing requirements.
The deal will also help the WMCA reach targets of delivering 215,000 new homes across the region by 2031 and brownfield regeneration in line with future housing and economic demand.
The MoU stipulates that 5% of the 215,000 homes will be delivered by the developers over the 11-year period, made up of multi-tenure homes of various ownership models.
Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street said:
“The West Midlands economy is continuing to grow at a fast pace and more companies and people are coming here looking to enjoy everything our region has to offer.
“This is of course brilliant news, but it also brings with it a set of challenges, especially in terms of providing enough homes and commercial premises to keep up with demand.
“Urban Splash is one of the most innovative developers in the UK using modern methods of construction that can deliver quality homes at pace on reinvigorated brownfield sites. By combining that expertise with WMCA resources, support and expertise we can help meet the housing demand and transform acres of former industrial land into vibrant new communities, protecting our precious greenbelt land in the process.”
Brownfield sites will be prioritised for transformation into distinct neighbourhoods with unique characteristics and identities, including homes such as ‘Mansion House’ and ‘Townhouse’.
