Major Homes England development deal secured for Birmingham
A regeneration scheme which forms part of a masterplan expected to attract £1.7bn worth of private sector investment has been agreed today (Apr 17) by Birmingham City Council and Homes England.
The major development project has been given the green light for Homes England to release land for one of the city’s largest developments.
Just over six acres (2.44 hectare) of land at the Montague site in Digbeth will be transformed into a thriving new neighbourhood.
Up to 1,000 new homes and 25,000 square metres of employment space are planned for the Montague Street site, which forms part of the Curzon Masterplan, estimated to bring 36,000 jobs and 600,000 square metres of commercial floorspace, with more than 4,000 homes and £1.7bn private sector investment.
Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said:
“This is a huge boost and the development will deliver much needed homes and jobs for the people of Birmingham.
"In addition to providing hundreds of new homes, the deal with Homes England will create around 25,000 square metres of employment space."
The new scheme will be located very close to HS2 Curzon Street Station and the Birmingham Eastside Metro Extension, making it perfectly placed to encourage economic growth in the area.
Stephen Kinsella, Chief Land and Development Officer at Homes England, said:
“Montague Street is the fourth and final parcel of land we’ve acquired in the area, creating one of the largest development sites in the city centre.
“Our acquisition of this site allows us to provide a significant number of additional homes in Digbeth, including affordable housing.”
Negotiations were given the go ahead after a report on the proposed site was discussed on Feb 11 2020.
It comes a few days after Homes England announced (Apr 14) that it had aquired £180m worth of housing sites this financial year, giving long term home to the housing sector following the coronavirus crisis.
