Locals urged to get involved in multi-million pound #MyTown campaign

People in 100 places across England have been encouraged to have a say in how the Town Deals, each worth up to £25m, can transform their towns.

Local people are being given the chance to shape their town’s future through a new campaign, launched by communities and Local Government secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP.

The #MyTown campaign allows people to influence a new generation of Town Deals and provides a way for communities to share and spread their history and ambitions for a bright future. This is part of the governments £3.6bn Towns Fund.

A new dedicated Facebook page has been set up to enable people to have their say, or it can be done on Twitter through #MyTown.

Communities and Local Government secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said:

“Too many towns feel neglected by Westminster politicians. This government is committed to levelling up all parts of the country.”

“That’s why we’re investing up to £25 million in 100 towns across the country. And I want local people to determine how that money is spent.”

Of the 100 invited to benefit from this scheme, 45 places sit within the Northern Powerhouse and 30 places are across the Midlands Engine.

Minister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth Rt Hon Jake Berry MP said:

“We are going further than any government before to level up every corner of our country.

“With our new £3.6 billion Towns Fund, we’re ramping up efforts to give local people power and money to decide what is best for their town.

“Wherever you live, getting involved in the My Town campaign is your chance to decide where this major investment should go.”

The ambitious development plans are part of the governments commitment to ‘level up all regions’ and it comes a day after the Housing Minister announced a ‘green housing revolution’ in the North.

The #MyTown transformations will come from a collaboration between communities, businesses and local leaders, focusing on local economic growth prospects including transport, broadband, connectivity, skills and culture.

Further towns will be given the chance to be part of the campaign through a competition, details of which will soon be announced by government.

The list of towns included in the #MyTown scheme can be found here.

£241 million of the Towns Fund will be available to support places in 2020 to 2021.
