No data, no accountability
The Commons Home Affairs select committee has highlighted a worrying trend in PCCs, with many increasing the budgets they inherited from the police authorities they replaced.
And there is a lack of transparency around this data, with no national register to ensure accountability.
Questions around the benefits of bringing in elected PCCs to manage policing budgets have already been raised, and evidence demonstrating their failure to make vital information public should be met with strong action.
PCCs have only been in post for just over half a year, so evaluation of their impact will be difficult. But without a national register in place, this may be difficult to collect even in the future.
