UK research and development projects receive £400m funding
Over £400m in Government and industry funding has been delivered to seven major research and innovation projects in the UK today (June 26).
Developing zero-emissions tech for maritime vessels, smart-packaging to cut food waste and new health products to tackle infections are among the supported projects.
Programmes will aim to supercharge the economy in the long-term as well as create thousands of jobs and skills across the country.
The£186m Government investment is part of UK Research and Innovation’s Strength in Places Fund and is backed by a further £230m from private firms and research institutions.
The breakdown of the funding and their recipients are:
- £114m to support a consortium led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine aiming to simplify infection diagnosis and make solutions more widely accessible.
- £91m for a consortium led by the University of Glasgow to develop new approaches to precision medicine.
- £63m for a consortium led by Artemis Technologies to develop zero-emissions technologies in Northern Ireland for maritime vessels, including a zero-emissions water taxi scheme.
- £55m for research aiming to understand financial behaviours and address financial challenges like accessing credit, property ownership and saving at the University of Edinburgh.
- £46m to support new digital formats in film making in the South West, led by the University of Bristol.
- £44m for a Cardiff University consortium developing technologies in communications, 5G, innovative vehicles and medical devices.
- £33m for the National Institute of Agriculture Botany EMR, for emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) automation and smart-packaging.
Business Secretary Alok Sharma said:
“Today’s announcement will ensure some of our country’s most promising R&D projects get the investment they need to take off and thrive.
“Working with the private sector our world-class universities, we’re backing new and innovative ideas that will create jobs and boost skills in every part of the UK for years to come.”
