Manchester City Council to do major review of local development plan
Key guidelines for development in Manchester over the next 15-20 years is to be reviewed, as new Local Plan is undertaken by City Council.
The new Local Plan will replace the city’s current Core Strategy and provide a set of principles that will underpin all new development in the region.
It is the first major review of the city’s development plan since 2012, aiming to respond to a variety of strategic issues.
These include growing demand for housing, transport infrastructure, neighbourhoods that promote healthy lifestyles and achieving a zero-carbon Manchester by 2038.
The city’s population shows no sign of slowing down, with numbers expected to hit 635,000 by 2025. The Local Plan should continue to promote inclusion and sustainability in all future plans and work closely with Manchester’s growth ambitions.
The Local Plan will also take into account the Our Manchester Strategy, the emerging Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF), the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and Greater Manchester’s new devolved planning powers.
Cllr Angeliki Stogia, Manchester City Council’s executive member for environment, planning and transport, said:
“Developing a new Local Plan is a vital process that will shape where new homes will be built, where new employment opportunities will be created, what amenities are needed - such as schools and healthcare - and the transport infrastructure that connect the entire city.
“This is a plan that will touch all of our lives in the next two decades, so we are keen to hear from as many people as possible about the issues they face - as well as potential options to improve them - and make sure everyone has a chance to shape our city. So please have your say.”
A report seeking approval to move to the initial consultation stage went to the Council’s executive yesterday (Jan 15).
It will be open for public and business consultation on Feb 7 for eight weeks. A draft plan is expected by winter 2020/21 with a final plan to be published in summer/autumn 2021, for a formal statutory consultation, ahead of submission to the Secretary of State.
