Official Recognition for Nottinghamshire Police Authority’s Progress

The significant improvement in Nottinghamshire Police Authority’s performance has been recognised by the Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and the Police Performance Steering Group.

At the quarterly PPSG meeting in London recently the Chair of the Police Authority, Jon Collins, and the Authority’s Change Manager, Alan Given, presented a report on the progress that has been made by the Authority since the publication in March this year of a Capability Review looking at the performance of both the Police Authority and the Police Force.

In addition, the Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police, Julia Hodson, presented a report on the Force’s latest performance figures, which show crime continues to fall in the County.

Official figures released by the Home Office last week highlighted that Nottinghamshire achieved a 15% reduction in overall crime in the year ending March 2010 (compared to the previous year), one of only two forces to reach this figure.

As a result the meeting was satisfied that no further degree of intervention was necessary and agreed that it would simply continue to monitor the Authority’s progress.

After the meeting the Police Authority’s Change Manager Alan Given said: “HMIC was heartened to see firm evidence of the progress that has been made in such a short space of time. Nottinghamshire has definitely come a long way very quickly.

“We know that there is more work to be done which is why HMIC will continue to monitor our progress and support our work. We are pleased to receive official recognition of the improvements we’ve made so far and welcome the ongoing level of support provided by HMIC.”

Following the publication of the Capability Review, the Authority appointed a Change Management Team headed by Alan Given and set up a Change Management Board, to help it deliver a robust and ambitious programme of sustainable improvements.

Since then, the Authority has changed its own leadership and appointed a new Chief Officer Team, equipped with the appropriate mix of skills to drive further performance improvements within Nottinghamshire Police.

The Authority has also introduced a new, highly effective committee structure and is making impressive progress with its own Development Plan which has helped to deliver today’s positive appraisal.
