The Institution of Civil Engineers is calling on industry to take part in an investigation into how the cost of delivering civil engineering works for major infrastructure projects can be reduced.
The investigation, to be led by Treasury body Infrastructure UK , will see the IUK team working closely with the ICE, industry, government and academia, to look at how the cost of delivering new and upgraded infrastructure in the UK can be driven down, whilst ensuring projects still deliver value for clients and the public.
As part of the investigation ICE has established an independent Stakeholder Reference Group to be chaired by Senior Vice President Peter Hansford of the Nichols Group. The SRG, which has issued an initial call for evidence to industry today, via a confidential online survey, will be facilitating input to the investigation from all facets of the industry and providing a channel through which wider industry can contribute and comment on emerging findings.
Peter Hansford, ICE Senior Vice President, said: “In times of austerity, it is important that industry plays its part in identifying ways to drive down costs. It is also important, that during a time when the UK needs to attract large volumes of private funds into essential infrastructure projects, there is not a perception amongst potential investors that the UK is an unnecessarily expensive place to deliver projects.
“Our joint work with Infrastructure UK into civil engineering costs, therefore, comes at a pivotal time and will help to establish the direct and indirect factors influencing the costs of major infrastructure projects. We urge individuals and organisations to contribute to the investigation and to encourage others such as smaller specialist civil engineering contractors, suppliers, or consultancy organisations, to also take part.”
