Sutton London Borough Council permanent chief executive announced
The new chief executive of Sutton London Borough Council has been announced, with Helen Bailey taking up the role at the authority.
Following former chief executive Niall Bolger’s departure for Hounslow Council at the end of 2018, the council’s selection process led by the Senior Officer Appointment Committee – made up of councilors from both main parties – settled on Bailey as the preferred candidate.
In her new role, Bailey will lead Sutton’s Corporate Management Team, taking over from interim chief executive Mary Morrissey, who will return to her post as the strategic director of environment, housing and regeneration.
Bailey said that over the years she has “observed and admired” the achievements of Sutton, and that it is a privilege to take up the reins when the borough is on the brink of exciting developments.
“I continue to be impressed by everyone I have met and by the dedication of colleagues, councillors and partners,” Bailey added. “I am very much looking forward to getting to know the whole borough better.”
The decision to recommend Bailey was made at the council’s committee earlier this month on 4 February.
Cllr Ruth Dombey, leader of the council, said: “Sutton is already a great place to live, work and raise a family, and I know that with Helen’s management of the council we will now achieve even more. Helen’s application shone through a very strong field of candidates.
“Helen’s experience, breadth of knowledge and insight into the public sector will serve Sutton well over the coming years. We have ambitious plans for the future and with Helen’s help we’ll now make them a reality.”
