Council chiefs and care leaders recognised in New Year’s Honours list
Public sector representatives feature heavily in the Queen’s latest New Year’s Honours list, with chief executives, police bosses and social care leaders all receiving tributes.
Hull’s City of Culture 2017 bid was strongly represented as Martin Green, chief executive and director of the campaign, receiving a CBE, while city council leader Stephen Brady, culture and place manager Jon Pywell, executive director Fran Hegyi, and chair Rosemary Millard were all given OBEs.
Both Craig Mackey, deputy commissioner of London’s Metropolitan Police Service, and Alan Wood, retired former director of children’s services in Hackney, received knighthoods.
Social care leaders were well represented in the list, with Ray James, former national president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS), and Andrea Sutcliffe, chief inspector of social care at the Care Quality Commission (CQC), each being awarded CBEs.
“I feel incredibly lucky and very grateful to be honoured in this way,” Sutcliffe commented. “Really, it is a tribute to the dedication and commitment of my team and colleagues at CQC who work so hard to improve the quality of life of people using adult social care services, their families and carers.”
A number of council representatives were also present in the Honours list, as Amanda Skelton, chief executive of Redcar and Cleveland Council, was awarded a CBE – while Annie Hampson, chief planning officer and development director for the City of London Corporation, Judith Hay, assistant director for children and families for North Yorkshire County Council, and Geraldine Doherty, former registrar of the Scottish Social Services Council, all received OBEs.
Councillors and local politicians featured in the list include Norma Redfearn, the elected mayor of North Tyneside, who received a CBE, and Ranjit Dheer, deputy leader of Ealing Council, who was awarded an OBE.
Graham Garvie, former Tweedale East councillor and convenor of Scottish Borders Council; Dennis Harvey, leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council; Ralph Hoult, a former deputy mayor in Ramsgate; and John Hudson, a councillor in Oldham, who has held his seat since 1977, were all given OBEs. Geoffrey Evans from Falmouth, Cornwall, received an MBE for his wide-ranging contribution to the community, including more than 40 years’ service as a local councillor.
A number of other local service providers were also honoured, with Joe Holness, a former inspector in Kent Police, receiving an OBE and Nuzhat Saleh, assistant director in the directorate of legal services for London’s Metropolitan Police, awarded a CBE.
In addition, Andrew Fry, former chief fire officer and chief executive of the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, was handed an OBE, as did Lynn Swift, director of people and organisational development at Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.
