Unison calls for an end to public sector job cuts
Unison is to call for a moratorium on further public sector job cuts across all service areas at this year’s Trade Union Congress in Liverpool.
The trade union, which represents more than 1.3 million members, has called for the General Council to develop a campaign to ensure that the future of public services is ‘firmly’ on the agenda at the next general election.
It added: “Cuts to services and jobs are becoming critical – with 60% of cuts still to come.
“Privatisation, outsourcing and restructuring are disrupting the delivery of services and frustrating attempts to meet longer term challenges, such as meeting the needs of an ageing society and rising expectations of service users.
“The democratic accountability and character of public services is being undermined by current government policies, such as the Council Tax cap and the hospital closure provisions of the Care Act.”
The 146th Annual Trades Union Congress will take place in Liverpool from 7-10 September 2014.
