Salmond outperforms Darling in final debate, but does it change anything?
Scottish first minister Alex Salmond staged a fight back in the final TV debate against Better Together head Alistair Darling ahead of September’s Scottish referendum.
After clashing on topics such as oil revenues, currency and the future of nuclear weapons, a snap poll of 505 voters in Scotland, conducted for the Guardian by ICM, gave Salmond a resounding victory.
According to the poll, 71% of respondents said the SNP leader was the victor with just 29% thinking Darling had won the contest.
This may be a crucial lift for the ‘yes’ campaign just as about 750,000 postal votes for the referendum are due to be sent out today and Wednesday.
However, the ICM pol l did reveal that Salmond’s victory in the BBC debate made little difference to the overall levels of support for independence, with support for both campaigns rising by one percentage point.
