Paring down ‘privilege’
Grayling’s latest suggestions for prison reform come across as vindictive tinkering rather than anything that would actually benefit the wider public, let alone offenders themselves.
Will withholding toys and incentives make prisoners more repentant, more eager to atone for their mistakes? These are adults, and treating them like naughty children underestimates their ability to choose their own actions.
Prison is not a luxury. To present it as such to justify further restrictions on liberty is misleading.
