Living in fear
People are disproportionately scared of crime, new statistics indicate today.
The UK Peace Index demonstrates how incidents of violent crime have consistently decreased over the past ten years, but the media barrage of terrorist threats, uncovered paedophiles, kidnappings and murder has coloured the way the public view their own safety.
The world is actually getting safer, and according to this data, the UK is doing so more rapidly than many other comparable countries.
And crime is unlinked to the number of police officers in service – an interesting point that opponents of the government’s approach to cuts in the public sector will be dismayed to learn.
