Falling between the cracks
New data from the OECD warns of the danger of cutting the welfare system in the UK, with income inequality widening since the economic crisis.
Welfare provides a net to catch those let down by employment, with narrowing opportunities to stay out of poverty. It supports millions of people, both young and old, and it is being completely restructured by this government.
What will the long-term effects of a ‘restructured’ (reduced) welfare system be on the UK? More inequality, more poverty, and a nation less able to bounce back from a weak economy. How can we push for growth when so many are being left behind?
Perhaps these figures will provide a reason to pause, and think again.
