Building a support system
Extra funding announced to support homeless people once they have been discharged from hospital will be incredibly welcome and offers the opportunity to break a cycle of ill health and homelessness.
Homeless people are significantly more vulnerable to admission to A&E or hospital, and cost the NHS more to treat. By enabling voluntary organisations to provide services and care as these patients return to the streets, thousands of lives could be improved.
It also presents a perfect example of the integrated care Norman Lamb has announced a new commitment towards. Local government must come together with the health service to improve provision for all patients, but particularly those most vulnerable.
