A number puzzle
The push to change the statutory ratios for childcare could risk quality of care, charities and parents are warning.
The move will clearly save money for child minders or their employers, but it is difficult to appreciate how care itself can be improved. Carers will simply come under greater stress, and be less capable to give sufficient attention to each child.
It is a difficult balance; childcare costs are too high, preventing many parents from going back to work, and cutting into their everyday living. But is the answer simply increasing ratios?
