Full council recommends Waverley budget proposals

Yesterday (Feb 6) Waverley Borough Council’s Executive unanimously approved the draft budget scheduled for presentation at the Full Council meeting on 18 February.

The draft budget sees council tax rise with inflation by 1.9%, allowing the council £378,000 in extra income compared to last year.

In addition to this, operational costs and staff savings means £700,000 more to spend on local services.

Waverley Borough Council estimate that in total, they will have accrued almost £1.9m in savings and new income when compared to last year.

A fall in funding from central government are quoted as the reason behind the cuts, however the council is committed to protecting funding for community, arts and voluntary sector groups.

Last year, Waverley Council sought out the opinions of residents to determine where they wanted the council’s budget to be spent.

The survey concluded that the majority of people weren’t aware of budgetary constraints that local governments are facing across the country.

In the survey carried out by the council, the main comments from residents on how to save money was to be more efficient with services/funds, review salaries/pensions/bonuses and reduce staff levels/restructure.
