Work begins on Liverpool's £4m improvement scheme
A £4m scheme of works begins today in Liverpool, resulting in the closure of a key route in the city.
Liverpool City Council has contracted the work on Princes Avenue and Road to form part of a £4m improvement that will create a cycle path along the central reservation.
Other improvements in this area include the planting of 20 trees, better seating, lighting and public artwork, new pedestrian and cycle paths and toucan crossings, as well as drainage and surface improvements.
Princes Road into the city will close from the roundabout to Upper Parliament Street from today (Apr 15) until April 29th and then again on May 18th until May 22nd.
Leading out of the city, Princes Avenue will be closed from Upper Parliament Street to the roundabout from April 30th to May 15th, during which time temporary bus diversions will be put in place.
The project is aiming to stimulate wider regeneration in the area with a rich connection to Liverpool’s Victorian maritime roots.
It also forms part of the Liverpool City Region’s Sustainable Transport Enhancement Package (STEP) which awarded the city council £1.925m from the STEP programme, with the remaining funding coming from the council’s Better Road’s Programme.
The STEP programme makes up part of the Local Growth Fund (LGF), awarded to the Liverpool City Region LEP and invested through the combined authority’s Strategic Investment Fund.
Councillor Sharon Connor, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet member for highways, said:
“The Princes Avenue/Road scheme will help breathe new life into this area.
“It’s going to revive the most beautiful boulevard in the city and transform how the wider Toxteth community interact and use this reimagined space.
“We know the roads are much quieter than normal due to the current coronavirus restrictions which means there will be a much lower impact than usual.
“This is classed as essential works and we will be making sure that contractors abide by the rules around social distancing and PPE.”
