Up to 10,000 new homes on the way with new £67m ‘landmark’ deal for Grimsby

Up to 8,800 new jobs and almost 10,000 homes could be created as part of a £67m landmark deal to regenerate the Greater Grimsby area.

The Stage 1 town deal, revealed yesterday by business minister Lord Henley and local growth minister Jake Berry MP, will include investment to establish Enterprise Zones to attract businesses and top talent to the area.

Funding for the plans comes from North East Lincolnshire Council, who are supplying £35m for the plans, alongside a government pledge of £30m to support the regeneration plans for Greater Grimsby.

A further £2m has been granted to the area from the government’s local growth fund to support major road improvements to the area.  Moody Lane and Woad Lane, which both connect to key South Humber Industrial Investment Programme Enterprise Zone sites, are amongst the areas chosen by the council to regenerate transport links around the area.

One example of this is Danish energy company Ørsted, who are building the UK’s largest operations base for offshore wind at Grimsby’s Royal Dock, providing a total of 350 jobs for local people.

The Greater Grimsby Project Board, under the leadership of David Ross and North East Lincolnshire Council, brought together local MPs, local enterprise partnerships (LEPs), and leaders from the public and private sectors to develop a vision for Greater Grimsby’s future which successfully secured the Town Deal.

The deal, which aims to create over 9,700 new homes, will be completed by 2032.

Jake Berry said: “This once-in-a-generation Town Deal signals a new dawn for Greater Grimsby with millions of pounds in government funding supporting the delivery of thousands of new jobs, and significant local investment in regeneration by 2032.

Business minister Lord Henley said the agreement delivers o the ambition to build a long-term viable plan for the town, and will boost the local economy by creating high quality jobs and spreading wealth across the area.

Cllr Ray Oxby, leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said the announcement was a hugely significant piece in the Town Deal jigsaw.

“Today’s news and announcement from the ministers is huge in term of commitment, and will give us further confidence and support in getting on with the nuts and bolts of the job to help deliver the real change our residents and business community deserve,” he added.

“I’m looking forward to us working with heritage, culture, housing, education, businesses, other sector groups and our communities in developing the detail of these exciting plans.’’
