Thurrock Council approves £1bn town centre regeneration scheme to build nearly 3,000 homes

Thurrock Council has approved plans for a £1bn town centre regeneration which will see nearly 3,000 new homes created and generate around 2,200 new jobs.

The proposals to transform mainly brownfield sites in Purfleet “into a new community” have been granted planning permission by the authority’s planning committee.

The plans were submitted by the joint venture Purfleet Centre Regeneration Ltd, and will see a host of new development brought to the area, namely a new town centre.

Shops and restaurants, a media village, a medical centre, a new primary school, improved transport infrastructure and 2,850 new homes will be introduced as part of the Purfleet regeneration, as well as 2,200 new jobs and other community improvements for residents.

The joint venture of housing association Swan and Urban Catalyst joined the regeneration scheme in 2017 after another housing association dropped out of the deal.

The first planning applications for 61 homes have already been submitted and are expected to be determined later this summer.

Some concerns were raised by councillors over potential congestion in the area, the impact HGVs will have on air quality and a previous application for the site which had already been approved.

But councillors voted to approve the plans last night after stating the number of new jobs “cannot be discounted.”

25/10/2017Take a moment to celebrate

Devolution, restructuring and widespread service reform: from a journalist’s perspective, it’s never been a more exciting time to report on the public sector. That’s why I could not be more thrilled to be taking over the reins at PSE at this key juncture. There could not be a feature that more perfectly encapsulates this feeling of imminent change than the article James Palmer, mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, has penned for us on p28. In it, he highlights... read more >
