Millions of new trees to be planted in 2014-15

Investment of £30m will support the planting of four million trees, the government has announced. The trees will be planted in 2,000 hectares of new woodland, and 200,000 hectares of existing woodland will also be improved or protected.

The funding will be split into £6m on new planting in 2014/15, with £24m on woodland management. Investing in forests will help to create jobs and economic opportunities for forestry companies, Defra said.

Dan Rogerson MP, minister for forestry, said: “Forests are a cherished national resource, which provide precious habitats for wildlife and natural spaces for generations to enjoy. Planting four million trees over the coming year will help us to extend woodland cover which will benefit wildlife, improve the environment and help grow the economy.

“New forests hold economic, as well as environmental and social benefits, enabling the forestry businesses to create more jobs and play an increasing role in the nation’s economic recovery.”
