Manchester leaders thank public for £4.1m donations to attack fund

Local leaders in Manchester have heaped praise on the public after £4.1m was raised in support of survivors of the terrorist attack on Monday in just 48 hours.

Two of Manchester’s biggest football clubs as well as countless members of the public donated to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund that will help those affected by the attack.

Manchester City and Manchester United jointly pledged £1m to the appeal, as well as England top scorer Wayne Rooney, the Arsenal Foundation and City midfielder Yaya Toure.

Mayor Andy Burnham and council leader Sir Richard Leese jointly thanked the two clubs, calling their donation a “wonderful act of generosity”.

“It shows how in our darkest hour people are coming together and that Manchester is a city of true solidarity – truly a City United,” they added.

Responding to donations to the Fund going above the £4m mark, lord mayor of Manchester Cllr Eddy Newman said: “I have been overwhelmed by all the support coming from across the world to help those affected by this terrible tragedy.

“People across the globe have been struck by our city’s defiance and resilience and want to help. It will make a real difference to those affected. Thank you.”

And Mike Adamson, chief executive of the British Red Cross,  commented that the response to the appeal continued to show “the very best of humanity”.

“In the immediate aftermath of the attack, people came together to help each other. By donating to support those affected by this terrible incident, that ethos continues,” he concluded. “The money raised will help those affected get the help they need today, tomorrow and into the future.”
